NON PLACES, 2019
I work in layers. I place things on top of things, hide specific details and highlight others, creating alternative frames and alternative perspectives. These frames become an additional layer in the viewer's gaze, one that unsettles what is familiar and known. Unlike the documentary tradition in photography, the work has no desire to record reality as it appears, nor to invite empathy, pleasant intimacy or identification. Through an erasure that is at times violent, the layers deny quick access to the world as we have learned to read it. Yet this erasure opens a queer form of representation: familiar symbols are sampled and reassembled into a parallel universe in which no single, absolute reading holds.
